เมื่ออายุห้าขวบ แม่ของ Hoffer ตกบันไดในขณะที่อุ้มเขาอยู่ ทำให้แม่อาการไม่ดีมาตลอด และตายจากไปในอีกสองปีต่อมา ส่วน Hoffer ก็ตาบอดตั้งแต่อายุเจ็ดขวบ แต่สายตาของเขา อยู่ดีๆ ก็กลับคืนมาเมื่ออายุสิบห้า เพราะกลัวว่าจะสูญเสียการมองเห็นไปอีกครั้ง เขาเริ่มอ่านทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง และกลายเป็นนักอ่านตัวยงมาตั้งแต่นั้น (อาการตาบอด ไม่เคยกลับมาอีก)
